I like being informed and I love the interactive Newsvine community, but I think in just the short time I’ve been here it has depressed me. There is no such thing as getting a positive conversation going—it starts and then fizzles. A story like “‘Tar Baby’, Isn’t Actually a Racial Slur” or “Boehner Pulls Out of Debt Talks,” that will hang around for days. On the other hand, an attempt to encourage President Obama or a seed encouraging a school board to assist a teacher is quickly dismissed from the vine. Even a discussion regarding the American Dream and what it means was quickly discarded. The point is that if you want to be a part of a really active discussion, you gotta be prepared to roll up your sleeves and wallow.
I’ve noticed that I even find my normally even tempered self getting caught up in the fray. I’m afraid if I keep it up my blood pressure might be affected—and, it was perfect.
I don’t know if too much of this is healthy in the long haul. Hopefully, my fellow Viners are balancing their negative exposure with some positive energy in their personal universe.
I must say that the Vine is pretty good about protecting us from full throttle abuse. I’ve been discreetly handled on a post and to be honest have actually been on the delivering end a time or two. But when someone just flat out called me an “idiot,” the group quickly squelched him or her (you never know).
Just an observation from a usually mild spirit who has found a little fire At the Table…
