I was talking to my friend Eddie about the fiscal cliff. Eddie laughed at me and said, “I been over the fiscal cliff my whole life. Now, don’t get me wrong ‘cause it’s gonna hurt.” Eddie laughed to himself and then went on to say, “I’m willing to eat a few sardines and Spam for a bit in order to get those rich folks back in the tax game.”
It is the Eddie’s that I have been most worried about, and if I know our President is that the Eddie’s that he is most worried about—those folks that live on the financial cliff known as a weekly paycheck. And, then Eddie said something that I really didn’t expect. He explained, “I have never been to a one of those little loan companies…I thought that as long as I stayed away from them then that meant I was doing okay. This cliff thing may send me where obviously many others are already going because they keep poppin’ up, so I just hope that if it does happen it don’t go on too long.”
So even with sacrifice, the “haves” will still have an opportunity to stick it to the working guy. I’ve been focusing on what this will do for those under the poverty line, but going over the cliff will first hurt the middle class as the elimination of the breaks for the employed will be the swiftest. I hope that is not a calculated outcome by the GOP.
But even so, the one thing that I think they have not counted on is the willingness of many to eat sardines and Spam for a bit to get the upper crust on board…the resolve of working America.
In all honesty, I love sardines and mustard…but I don’t know anyone who loves Spam. But if that is what it takes then I’m all in.
