I cannot stomach what happened yesterday on the senate floor. With 38 Republicans casting “No” votes, the Senate rejected a United Nations treaty on the rights of the disabled that is modeled after the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act.
This is by far the biggest indicator of just what we are in for the next four years (perhaps only two) from this renegade faction of the GOP. If veterans Bob Dole and John McCain could not muster up enough votes to pass a Veteran's Treaty that would cost us virtually nothing because we are already in compliance and would extend these protections to veterans around the world then what can we get beyond these political obstructionists.
Tea party favorite Sen. Mike Lee led the obstruction arguing that the treaty by its very nature threatened U.S. sovereignty. Lee expressed concerns that the treaty could lead to the state, rather than parents, determining what was in the best interest of disabled children in such areas as home schooling, and that language in the treaty guaranteeing the disabled equal rights to reproductive health care could lead to abortions. Parents, Lee said, will "raise their children with the constant looming threat of state interference."
What bull!
There are some who might defend this as political posturing...well, this was not the time, not on something this important.
These folks are killing our country. I simply do not believe this was the intent of those who voted them into office. I definitely know that this is not what the veterans that supported the GOP were expecting to get.
