Today, many women…and men are at a crossroads in this Presidential race. Immediately after the debate, I heard a young woman say that the Lilly Ledbetter legislation was important, but she needed a job. Did she not understand that Mitt Romney has not said once that he is bringing back good jobs? He is trying to get a level playing field for big employers... and LABOR is the biggest employee expense. In the Romney world not only will equal pay for equal work become a non-conversation, but I assure you the minimum wage and employee benefits will be placed on the table. Those entitlements that would definitely be severely cut under the Ryan plan would be more important than ever.
Is it so hard to understand that just a job is not enough? If you cannot support (feed and provide healthcare) your family on your wages then you will definitely need food stamps and the Affordable Healthcare Act—both of which will not be there under a Romney administration. There will be little or no extra money to invest in retirement, therefore a healthy Social Security and Medicare program will be essential--not based upon how well you have invested or how much you have to contribute to a voucher program.
Romney is telling us that he wants to even the playing field for American businesses. Those businesses don’t just run to other countries due to overregulation and taxes; the main reason is cheap labor. Unions are under attack by the GOP all over this country. I don’t want a union at my job, but I do understand that my employers are kept on their toes for fear of a union takeover. The result is employers pay fair wages and provide good benefits. And, these folks don't even care if you get an education anymore because cheap laborers don't need that much education. President Obama is trying to ready all Americans for the future; Romney is attempting to take us back to the good ole days--but this time it won't just be black folks doing the work for low wages. And, if the GOP is rolling back the rights that have already been fought and won by citizens then God help those looking for immigration reform.
In Tuesday night's debate, Mitt Romney again offered his Massachusetts governorship as proof of his ability to balance the budget and create jobs. The problem is that his claim is a bunch of "MALARKEY." Romney faced a similar situation to our national situation in Massachusetts and had similar results to President Obama’s administration—and, then he bailed. That is why he is losing the state of Massachusetts miserably. Well, I suppose if Romney is elected, then these women…and blue collar men…will understand. They will feel like the Negroes who were too tired to take anymore and so in concert with many others who understood the injustice mounted a movement that released colored people from Jim Crow laws. And, maybe then they will stop buying into the sketchy mess that the Romney’s of the world are selling them.
