The Washington Post’s George Will says that President Obama is winning because he is Black. Mitt Romney said he had two things in his favor. Not long ago Mitt Romney said he would have a better chance at winning if he were Latino.
African Americans constitute only 13.6 percent of the population and Hispanics only 16.7 percent but that does not accurately reflect voter turnout.
Overall, whites made up 76.3% of the record 131 million people who voted in the 2008 presidential election, while blacks made up 12.1%, Hispanics 7.4% and Asians 2.5%.
So, any Presidential candidate--including President Obama--would have to garner much of the white vote to be successful.
