Mormon doctrine taught that blacks have darker skin because they are cursed by God. No Mormon or Latter Day Saints leader has ever formally retracted or repudiated these beliefs—they have never said the doctrine was wrong.
Until 1978, the LDS church banned men of African descent from its priesthood, a position open to nearly all Mormon males and the gateway to sacramental and leadership roles. The church had also barred black men and women from temple ceremonies that promised access in the afterlife to the highest heaven.
In 1978, a divine revelation alleged by then-prophet Spencer W. Kimball resulted in the church finally overturning the ban and allowing all worthy males, regardless of race, full and equal membership in the religion. But never did they state those with darker skin were not cursed by God.
Is this a problem?
Please notice that I have added one question that has nothing to do with whether or not you are a Mormon. It is regarding whether or not you believe darker skin is the result of a curse by God.
