Religion is always in the news--in some way or another. It has actually been front and center in this election.
Over the years I have tried with all my heart to fit the concepts of creationism and evolution in a neat little package--trying to find explanations for the Bible to be true and evolution to be possible. If you listen to academics and those who simply do not believe in a higher being, one might even think that to truly believe in creationism would make one somewhat backward. I have often found myself scoffing a bit at the far right because of their stance on teaching evolution in the school system. And then it happened...my highly educated, pastor with his doctorate in Theology from a reputable college stood before our congregation and said he did not believe in evolution. I simply stared, fanned and tried not to look as if I ever dared think evolution was possible. There were moments when I just wanted to laugh hysterically...not mind you because of his belief, but because of my hypocrisy and the shame I felt--I felt like a child hiding stolen candy in my hand. And, I thought to myself...Is it possible to really be a Christian and to believe in evolution?
